Behind every garment there is a story we can prove.
At Mamasara we believe trust is built through transparency. Every piece is made by a certified supplier in Peru, chosen and audited by us on the basis of its technical documentation, its international certifications and its track record.

Baby Alpaca is not a young alpaca: it is a classification of the fineness of the fibre, not of the animal's age.
It identifies the finest, softest fibres selected during the sorting process.
- Natural fibre of animal origin (pure keratin).
- Internal microscopic air pockets: insulates against the cold and breathes in mild climates.
- Hypoallergenic: contains no lanolin, does not itch.
- Hard-wearing: it does not lose its shape and keeps its silky natural lustre through washing.
- Fibre thickness: 18 to 36 microns depending on the piece, from extremely fine garments to thermal blankets.
- Natural colours: 9 base colours, more than 24 shades and tones.
- Scale height: 0.25–0.30 microns, compared with 0.65–0.90 for wool, softer: a measurable figure.
Alpaca vs. cashmere vs. wool
| Property | Alpaca | Cashmere | Sheep's wool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural grease | 2.8–3.9% | 5.0–7.2% | 9.5–27.0% |
| Scale height | 0.25–0.30 µm | N/A | 0.65–0.90 µm |
| Natural colours | 9 base (+24 shades) | N/A | 3 |
| Contact with the ground | Soft pad | Hard hoof | Hard hoof |
Less natural grease means less water and fewer chemicals to wash the fibre. Natural colours reduce the need for industrial dyeing. The alpaca's tread does not damage the pasture it feeds on: it eats only the upper part, without pulling up the roots.
An alpaca produces approximately 2.2 kg of raw fibre a year, of which 1.85 kg is clean fibre, and requires 1.3 kg of feed a day.
At 90% relative humidity, alpaca fibre absorbs 21.4% moisture, compared with 15% for cotton and 2.5% for acrylic.
The fibre comes from the high Andean regions of southern Peru, above 3,800 metres above sea level.
- Puno: the alpaca region par excellence, with the largest alpaca population in the world. Most of the fibre comes from here.
- Cusco: alpaca herding is the main livelihood of communities in the mountain range.
- Arequipa: the historic centre where the fibre is collected, sorted by hand by expert sorters and processed.
Our manufacturer carries out scientific research in Puno aimed at improving fibre quality, conserving alpaca diversity and transferring knowledge to high Andean producers. This work has resulted in 78 scientific publications.
Alpacas were domesticated in the Andes between 10,000 and 6,000 BC. Today Peru is home to 4.3 million alpacas, 80% of the world population, and 150,000 smallholder families depend on them.
A Peruvian manufacturer founded in 1996, with 30 years of experience and its headquarters in Arequipa.
- 1,257 people employed, 63% of them women.
- Vertically integrated model: from fibre to finished garment, under one roof. Not an intermediary subcontracting without control.
- The only Peruvian factory producing vicuña garments for export, made entirely on Peruvian soil and in strict compliance with the CITES protocol. This reflects the manufacturer's level of technical rigour, although it does not apply directly to baby alpaca.
Standards and recognitions that support our supplier's environmental, social and commercial management.
Our supplier holds certifications and controls applicable to certain fibres, materials, processes and product references. Their application varies by product.
These certifications, standards and controls belong to the supplier and their application depends on each fibre, material, process or product reference. They do not necessarily apply to this piece.
Pieces in natural colours carry no dye; dyed pieces use certified products free from restricted substances.
They go through no dyeing process: the colour is the fibre's own, with no added dyes or pigments. There is no colour chemistry to certify because none is used.
Colour is applied using certified and dated chemical products:
- Certificate dated 30/03/2026: the dyeing products contain no substances restricted under REACH (EU 1907/2006) or the ECHA SVHC list (25/08/2025), and comply with Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, edition 04.2025.
- Second European certificate, dated 01/04/2026, valid until 01/04/2028: no SVHC substances above 0.1% according to the ECHA list of February 2026.
Our manufacturer holds RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard) and RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certifications, which ensure that supplying farms meet rigorous criteria for animal welfare and responsible land management.
- It does not damage the pasture as it walks: its soft pad, unlike the hard hoof of other grazing animals, minimises the impact on the soil.
- It eats only the upper part of the grass, without pulling up the root, allowing it to regenerate.
- It lives above 3,800 m, where it does not compete for land or water with food production.
Carbon footprint, energy, water, circular economy and packaging: environmental impact measured and certified.
- Carbon footprint: reported for 5 consecutive years to "Huella de Carbono Perú"; 4th star in 2025 (the highest level), a second consecutive reduction in CO₂, and the AENOR "Carbon Footprint CO₂ Calculated" mark.
- Energy: an energy mix based on hydroelectric electricity and natural gas.
- Water: industrial effluents comply with the Maximum Permissible Values of Peruvian environmental regulations.
- Circular economy: RCS certification since 2024 (recertified in 2025); the textile recycling programme purchased 36 tonnes of waste in 2025 and avoids approximately 120 tonnes of textile waste going to landfill each year.
- Packaging: zero plastic in labels (biodegradable paper); packaging is 100% recyclable and biodegradable cardboard and paper.
